Frequently asked questions

Why does my scanned PDF give no text?

A scan is a picture of a page, so there is no text to extract. This tool only reads PDFs that already contain text; it will tell you when a file has none. OCR for scans is not supported yet.

Will columns and tables keep their layout?

Text comes out in the order the PDF stores it, with line breaks and paragraph gaps kept. Multi-column pages and tables may need a little tidying afterwards.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. PDF to Text runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.

Is PDF to Text really free?

Yes. There's no account and no watermark. A short optional ad, or a 20-second wait, unlocks each download. That's how we keep it free.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, processing happens locally, so it keeps working even if your connection drops.
