Sentences over 25 words are highlighted

Good writing is easy to read. Short sentences help, and so do plain words. When every sentence runs on for a very long time, adds clause after clause and never gives the reader a place to stop and breathe, understanding quickly becomes difficult for almost everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Which readability scores does it calculate?

Flesch Reading Ease (higher is easier), plus the grade-level scores Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Coleman-Liau and the Automated Readability Index. Syllables are estimated by rule, so results can differ slightly from other tools.

Does it work for Spanish, German, Hebrew or Japanese?

Partly. The grade formulas were built for English, so for other languages you get language-neutral statistics: words per sentence, word length and highlighted long sentences.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Readability Checker runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.

Is Readability Checker really free?

Yes. There's no account and no watermark. A short optional ad, or a 20-second wait, unlocks each download. That's how we keep it free.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, processing happens locally, so it keeps working even if your connection drops.
