Frequently asked questions
Can I unlock any PDF?
Only unlock PDFs you own or have permission to unlock. For a PDF that asks for a password when you open it, you need that password: this tool removes a password you know, it doesn't crack or guess one.
What if my PDF opens fine but won't let me print or copy?
That's a permissions password. You don't need to know it: drop the file in and press “Unlock PDF” to get a copy without the printing, copying and editing limits.
Is my password or file sent anywhere?
No. The PDF and the password stay in your browser, where the file is decrypted on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
Will the unlocked PDF look the same?
Yes. Only the encryption is removed: text stays selectable and searchable, and images, links, bookmarks and forms are kept exactly as they were.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Unlock PDF runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.
Is there a file size limit?
No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.
