Frequently asked questions
How are the two PDFs compared?
The text of each page is read and compared word by word with the same page of the other file, ignoring spacing and line-break differences. The visual overlay renders both pages and marks every pixel that differs in red, which also catches changed images, colours and layout.
What if a page was added or removed?
Pages are compared by position (page 3 with page 3). An inserted page therefore shows up as changes on every page after it, and extra pages at the end are marked as only in one file.
Can I compare scanned PDFs?
Scans have no text to compare, so use the visual overlay: it works on any PDF, as long as both versions are scanned at the same size and position.
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. Both files are opened and compared in your browser on your device, which suits contracts and other confidential documents.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Compare PDF runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.
Is there a file size limit?
No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.
