Frequently asked questions
What is EXIF data?
EXIF is information your camera or phone saves inside each photo: the camera and lens, settings like shutter speed, aperture and ISO, the date and time, and often the GPS location. IPTC and XMP add captions, keywords, copyright and editing history.
Can I see where a photo was taken?
Yes, if the photo has GPS tags. The coordinates are shown with an Open in OpenStreetMap link. The map isn't loaded inside the page, so the location is only sent to OpenStreetMap if you click the link.
Why does my photo show no metadata?
WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and many other apps remove metadata when you share a photo, and screenshots and edited exports often have none. Try the original file from the camera or phone.
Is my photo uploaded to read the metadata?
No. The metadata is read in your browser, so the photo never leaves your device.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. EXIF Viewer runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.
Is there a file size limit?
No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.
