Frequently asked questions

When should I embed an image as Base64?

For small images such as icons, logos and tiny backgrounds (a few KB), where saving an extra HTTP request helps, or when an email, a single HTML file or a JSON payload needs the image inside it. For photos and large graphics a separate image file loads faster and can be cached.

Why is the Base64 bigger than my image?

Base64 stores every 3 bytes as 4 text characters, so it is about 33% larger than the original file. The tool shows both sizes and warns you when an image is over 10 KB.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Encoding and decoding run in your browser, so your images and the Base64 text never leave your device.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Image to Base64 runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.

Is Image to Base64 really free?

Yes. There's no account and no watermark. A short optional ad, or a 20-second wait, unlocks each download. That's how we keep it free.
