Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to extract the text?

No. The text recognition (Tesseract OCR) runs in your browser. Only the engine and the language data, about 1–3 MB per language, are downloaded once from a public CDN and cached by your browser. Your images never leave your device.

Which languages can it read?

English, Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Japanese, Hebrew, Italian, Russian, Arabic and Simplified Chinese. Choose the language of the text before adding the image; if you picked the wrong one, change it and press Read again.

How can I get more accurate text?

Use a sharp, well-lit image where the text is straight and large enough to read easily. Screenshots and scans read best. Handwriting and stylized fonts are often recognized poorly.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Image to Text runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.

Is Image to Text really free?
