OpenAI counts are exact (tiktoken o200k_base and cl100k_base). Claude and Gemini don't publish their tokenizers, so those numbers are estimates from each provider's own ratio: about 2.5 characters per token for Claude and 4 for Gemini. OpenAI hasn't published the GPT-6 tokenizer either, so treat the o200k_base count as an estimate for GPT-6 models.

Frequently asked questions
How accurate are the token counts?
GPT counts use OpenAI's own tiktoken encodings, so they match what GPT-5, GPT-4.1 and GPT-4o see for plain text (chat formatting adds a few tokens per message). Claude and Gemini counts are estimates; for exact numbers use each provider's token-counting API.
Why does each model give a different number?
Every model family has its own tokenizer with its own vocabulary. The same sentence can be 10 tokens for one model and 14 for another, and non-English text and code usually need more tokens than English prose.
How many words is one token?
For English, one GPT token is about 4 characters or three quarters of a word. Other languages, code and numbers use more tokens per word. Paste your own text to see the real ratio.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. AI Token Counter runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.
Is there a file size limit?
No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.
