    Frequently asked questions

Which transcript formats does it understand?

SRT and WebVTT subtitle files (cue numbers, timings, WEBVTT headers, NOTE and STYLE blocks and tags like <i> or <v Name>), YouTube's transcript panel, YouTube auto-captions with their repeated rolling lines, and Zoom, Teams and Otter transcripts with timestamps or speaker lines.

    How are speakers handled?

Speaker names from labels like "Maria:", "<v Maria>" or a "Dana Lee 0:03" line start a new paragraph. Untick "Keep speaker names" to remove the names; each speaker still gets their own paragraph.

How do I get a transcript from YouTube?

Under the video, open the description and click "Show transcript", then select and copy the text from the panel and paste it here. The timestamps are removed automatically. Everything runs in your browser.

    Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Transcript Cleaner runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.

    Is Transcript Cleaner really free?

Yes. There's no account and no watermark. A short optional ad, or a 20-second wait, unlocks each download. That's how we keep it free.
