Frequently asked questions
What formatting is converted?
Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, bulleted and numbered lists, tables, links and footnotes. Fonts, colours and page layout are not part of Markdown and are left out.
What happens to images?
By default they are left out, because Markdown can't hold the picture itself. Choose Keep alt text to put each image's description in its place.
Can I convert old .doc files?
No, only .docx (Word 2007 and newer). Open the .doc in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice and save it as .docx first.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Word to Markdown runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.
Is there a file size limit?
No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.
Is Word to Markdown really free?
Yes. There's no account and no watermark. A short optional ad, or a 20-second wait, unlocks each download. That's how we keep it free.
