Frequently asked questions
Which dashes does it replace?
The em dash (—) and the horizontal bar (―) always, and the en dash (–) when you tick the box. Normal hyphens (-) in words like "well-known" are never touched, and spaces around a dash are tidied so you don't get double spaces.
What happens to number ranges like 10–20?
With en dashes switched on, a dash between two numbers becomes a plain hyphen, so "10–20" turns into "10-20" instead of "10, 20". Other en dashes follow the style you picked.
Does removing em dashes make text look less like AI?
Em dashes are a well-known habit of AI writing, so many people remove them. But this tool only swaps punctuation: it doesn't rewrite your text, and it can't guarantee that any AI detector will see it differently. It runs entirely in your browser.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Em Dash Remover runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.
Is there a file size limit?
No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.
Is Em Dash Remover really free?
Yes. There's no account and no watermark. A short optional ad, or a 20-second wait, unlocks each download. That's how we keep it free.
