How to use Tone Generator

  1. Pick a frequency

    Drag the slider from 20 Hz to 20 kHz, type an exact value, or tap a preset like A4 (440 Hz). Or switch to Sweep to glide between two frequencies.

  2. Choose the sound

    Select sine, square, sawtooth or triangle, and play it through both speakers or only the left or right one.

  3. Play or download

    Press Play with your volume low, then raise it slowly. Download the tone as a WAV file if you need it later.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this for a hearing test?

You can check roughly which high frequencies you still hear with a sweep or by stepping the frequency up. Most adults stop hearing somewhere between 12 and 17 kHz. It isn't a medical test, and your headphones or speakers also limit what you hear.

How do I test my speakers or headphones?

Use Left only and Right only to check each channel is wired correctly, and a slow 20 Hz to 20 kHz sweep to hear where bass and treble fade or rattle.

Is it safe to play test tones?

Yes, if you keep the volume low. Pure tones sound quieter than they are and can damage hearing or tweeters, especially at high frequencies. The tool caps the volume and warns you, but always start with your device volume down.

Can I download the tone?

Yes. Choose a length up to 60 seconds and download a stereo 44.1 kHz WAV. It is generated in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Tone Generator runs entirely in your browser. Your files are processed on your device and are never sent to a server.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit. The only limit is your device's memory. Very large files work best in a desktop browser.
